Cape Town International Convention Centre, 12 to 14 November 2024. AfricaCom, part of Africa Tech Festival, brings the continent’s telecoms and technology companies under one roof, and we were on stand C22 with colleagues from Inrico who flew in from China.
New products for the South African market
Our partners from Inrico came with their newest radios and ideas for South African buyers. The IRC380 hybrid radio and the S380 smart PoC radio had pride of place on the stand walls, and the screens ran iConvNet, Inrico’s convergent system that brings dispatch, patrol management and video into one place.
Two parts of the platform had walls of their own. Guard Patrol closes the loop on a security patrol, from the NFC checkpoints a guard scans to the report that reaches the control room. The AI recognition system uses cameras and facial recognition to give an early warning when a known suspect appears.
A visit from the South African Police Service
Members of the South African Police Service came to the stand to find out more about body worn cameras and push-to-talk over cellular. Much of the conversation was about the radios police rely on today, which depend on repeaters and other fixed infrastructure. When a site goes down, so does the channel, and more coverage means building more sites.
PoC radios take a different route. They talk over the mobile network, so a radio works wherever there is signal, with instant voice to one person or a whole group and every unit visible to a dispatcher. For a service that cannot change everything at once, a dual-mode radio like the IRC380 works on VHF and UHF two-way radio as well as 4G, so a team can keep using conventional radio channels while the move to PoC happens. Body worn cameras such as the I-10 add live video and GPS to the same system.
Celebrating at the Waterfront
When the show closed, the whole team went down to the V&A Waterfront to celebrate three good days in Cape Town. Thank you to the Inrico team for travelling so far to be with us, and to everyone who came to see us at C22.
